Grandmother
There was a day
When youth was yours
A little one
And being so
Giggled and gurgled
Tripped on a nappy
Jumped on the cat
Swung on a swing
Wore your friend’s hat
Days were short in winter
Long in summer
The swallows came
And flew away
The little girl danced
And danced again
Straight into our lives
Mother, wife
Cousin, aunt
Mum, grandmother
Friend, confidante
Just a few titles
For a fine lady
She knew
And saw
Heard, touched, stroked
And listened to so much stuff
Filling a thousand books or more
Little girl, old lady
Free spirit, sweet soul
Her kindness
Was part of us
Her patience
And impatience
We shared
Eating, drinking, cooking
Waking, walking, thinking
In the house
In the garden
She stays with us
Bent over a toddler
Pushing a pram
Fixing problems
Part of the clan
She is here
Always
And now we honour her
For being part of us
As we are part of her
We share her pride
We share her love
And honour her memory
For she is our guide
